Captain’s Log - A Local Expat’s Guide to Snorkeling in Phuket

Welcome to my home, Phuket – Thailand. I’ve been living here long enough to know all the hidden gems… and lucky for you, I happen to run a boat tour, so I get to show people the good stuff every day. Snorkeling in Phuket is a real treat. The waters are warm, crystal-clear, and packed with colorful coral and schools of tropical fish. And yes, if you’re lucky, you might even meet a curious sea turtle or two. Honestly, even after years of showing this off, I still get a kick out of watching people’s faces the first time they see what’s under the surface.

What You’ll See When Snorkelling in Phuket

Snorkelling around Phuket is like peeking into a living, breathing aquarium. Lucky for you, I’ve been showing people these waters for years. The seabed is a riot of colours, shapes, and life, with coral gardens stretching as far as the eye can see. Tropical fish such as clownfish (yes, Nemo makes an appearance), parrotfish, angelfish, butterflyfish, and many more dart and weave among the corals. Here are some of the creatures and sights you might spot:

  • Sea turtles: Every now and then, a gentle green or hawksbill turtle glides by. They’re shy but curious. Watch quietly and they’ll say hello.
  • Reef sharks: Small blacktip reef sharks may swim past, sleek and graceful, but harmless to snorkellers.
  • Napoleon wrasse: A huge, vividly patterned fish that can grow to impressive sizes. Hard to miss if you spot one!
  • Manta rays (rare): Graceful gliders that sometimes appear around deeper reefs.
  • Bioluminescent plankton (night snorkelling/diving): Tiny organisms that light up when disturbed. Like swimming through stars.
  • Octopus: Masters of camouflage, usually hiding on the seafloor, revealing themselves only if you look closely.
  • Sea urchins & starfish: Found on rocky surfaces or sandy patches, adding texture and quirky shapes to the seabed.
  • Unique marine flora: Sea fans, anemones, and underwater plants add colour and life to the seascape. Even after decades, I still marvel at it.

Best Places in Phuket for Snorkelling

When it comes to snorkelling in Phuket, the coastline is full of gems. Some obvious, and some only an old-timer like me might know about. Here are my favourites: ✅

1. Coral Island (Koh Hae)

Just a short boat ride away. Crystal-clear waters, vibrant coral gardens. Great if you’re new to snorkelling or want a gentle swim.

2. Koh Phi Phi

A bit further out, but worth it. Dramatic underwater cliffs, rich marine life, and impossibly clear water.

3. Raya Island (Koh Racha)

Soft white sand, turquoise water, and excellent visibility. Perfect for a peaceful day with colourful fish.

4. Koh Dok Mai

A hidden gem with rich coral reefs and fewer tourists. Ideal if you like a quieter, more relaxed snorkel.

5. Ao Sane Beach

A local favourite with rocky reefs teeming with life. It’s a bit more rugged, but that’s part of the charm.

6. Koh Lon

Just off the east coast of Phuket, this little island is often overlooked. Calm waters and plenty of tropical fish make it perfect for a half-day snorkel.

7. Koh Bon

A quiet spot with shallow reefs and plenty of colourful coral. Great for beginners or those looking for a relaxing snorkel without the crowds.

8. Racha Noi

Less visited than Racha Yai, this island has dramatic underwater landscapes, with coral gardens and schools of fish around every corner.

9. Nai Harn Beach

Not just for sunbathing—its sheltered waters and rocky areas make for a surprisingly good snorkelling experience, especially in the morning when the water is calm.

10. Similan Islands

A little further afield, but totally worth it. Crystal-clear waters, world-class coral reefs, and some of the best visibility you’ll find in Thailand. Expect vibrant marine life, including manta rays, reef sharks, and schools of fish that’ll make your snorkelling trip unforgettable.
