Phuket in March: The Underrated Month

March is quietly one of the better months to visit Phuket and it does not get the attention it deserves. The reasoning is simple: March has almost the same sea conditions as February, but the January-February peak-season crowd has thinned considerably. The result is a month that offers excellent conditions with slightly less pressure on accommodation and boat trip availability.

The weather and sea

The dry season is still firmly established in March. The northeast monsoon is beginning to weaken toward the end of the month but the transition is gradual and the sea conditions are typically excellent throughout. Underwater visibility at Phi Phi remains high — often 15 to 20 metres. Daytime temperatures rise slightly from February, averaging 30 to 33 degrees, which makes the midday heat something to manage but the mornings and late afternoons are outstanding.

The crowd picture

Post-Chinese New Year, post-European school holidays, and pre-Easter creates a window in early to mid March that is among the quietest periods in the dry season. The popular spots are busy — Phi Phi and James Bond Island will never be empty in good weather — but the pressure is lower and booking lead times are shorter than in December, January, or February. Easter weekend pushes crowds up again in late March most years.

The light

March light deserves a specific mention. The sun angle is lower than midsummer, the air is generally clear, and the late afternoon light on the Phang Nga Bay limestone in March is among the finest I see all year. For photography, March and November bracket the year as the two best months.

Despite the slightly lower pressure compared to peak season, March boat trips still require advance booking. Our popular departures — particularly the James Bond Sunset Experience — book out 2 to 3 weeks ahead in March. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed rather than on arrival.
