Phuket in February: Peak Season at Its Best

February is the peak of the Andaman dry season and by most measures the finest month on the water all year. The northeast monsoon is fully established, the sea is at its calmest, and the underwater visibility at Phi Phi regularly exceeds 20 metres. If you are choosing a month for your Phuket trip and the boat trips are your priority, February is the answer.

The conditions

Clear skies, daytime temperatures of 28 to 31 degrees with lower humidity than the wetter months, and seas that are consistently flat on the western coast. February is also one of the better months for whale shark sightings at the Similan Islands — the plankton blooms that attract them are at peak in January and February.

Chinese New Year

Chinese New Year falls in late January or February depending on the lunar calendar and is worth building around if you can. Phuket has a large and long-established Chinese-Thai community and the celebrations in Phuket Town are genuine and significant — not a tourist performance but a real cultural event. The street decorations, the temple ceremonies, the lion dances in the Old Town, and the general festive atmosphere add a dimension to a February visit that other months do not offer.

Book everything early

February is the busiest month of the year alongside January. Boat trip departures fill up weeks ahead on popular dates. Accommodation in the better hotels is booked months ahead. The clearest advice: once flights are confirmed, book the boat trips immediately. The Phi Phi day trip and James Bond Sunset Experience in February require genuine advance planning, not a last-minute booking from your hotel lobby.

What February does not have

Cheaper prices. February is peak season pricing across accommodation, restaurants, and tours. The value proposition is the quality of the conditions rather than any saving. Crowds are at their peak. The boats from Phuket to Phi Phi carry their highest passenger loads in February. This is precisely why the choice of operator matters most in this month — a small group departure that goes early creates a genuinely different experience to a large ferry following the same route at the same time as everyone else.
