Most visitors to Phi Phi come as a day trip from Phuket or Krabi. Some stay overnight. The question of which is right for you depends on what you want from the experience.
A full day on the islands — typically 7am to 4pm from Phuket — covers the main highlights: Nui Beach, Monkey Bay, lunch on Tonsai, Maya Bay, and a snorkelling stop or two. You see the islands at their most spectacular and you return to Phuket with your hotel, your restaurants, and your plans for the next day intact. For most first-time visitors, the day trip is the right format.
Phi Phi after the day-trippers leave is a different place. The Tonsai Beach village — normally busy and slightly chaotic in the middle of the day — settles into a genuinely pleasant small island town by early evening. The beach is quieter. The restaurants are better-paced. Maya Bay, which can be visited again in the morning with an early longtail before the tour boats arrive from the mainland, looks like the place it was always supposed to be.
The sunrise from the Phi Phi viewpoint — a 20-minute climb from Tonsai — is extraordinary. You need to be on the island the night before to get there at the right time. No day trip covers this.
The night dive or sunset snorkel around the islands, in water that has had the afternoon crowd removed from it, is also significantly better than the midday equivalent.
Phi Phi Don has a range of accommodation from basic fan-cooled bungalows to mid-range resorts on the quieter bays. The main Tonsai area has plenty of options at every price point. Loh Dalum Bay, on the other side of the narrow isthmus, has slightly more upmarket options with a view across the bay toward the sunset. Phi Phi is not a luxury destination — the infrastructure is limited by the island’s size and the national park constraints — but for a night or two it is entirely comfortable.
For a first visit to Phi Phi: day trip. You will see everything that matters and return to a more comfortable base in Phuket.
For a second visit, or for anyone who specifically wants the sunrise viewpoint, the evening atmosphere, and the early morning access to Maya Bay before the crowds: one night is well worth it. Two nights allows a more relaxed pace without the sense of having to rush.
Phi Phi Leh — the uninhabited island with Maya Bay — has no accommodation and day visit only, regardless of how long you stay on Phi Phi Don.
