Surin and Kamala are the beaches I recommend most often to people who ask me where to base themselves in Phuket. They sit between the full tourist infrastructure of Patong in the south and the luxury resort zone of Bang Tao in the north, and the balance they strike suits a wide range of travellers.
A long, gently curving bay with calmer development than Patong, a proper local village at its northern end, and a beach that is wide enough to find a quiet spot even in peak season. The development is mixed — there are tourist restaurants and guesthouses, but there is also a functioning Thai community with local shops, a morning market, and a mosque that has been there longer than any of the hotels.
Freedom Beach, accessible by longtail from Kamala’s southern end, is one of the best hidden beach options on the island — a short ride away and a world apart in terms of crowd density.
Kamala is also home to Phuket Fantasea, the large-scale Thai cultural show that families with children often visit. I am neutral on it as an experience, but it is there and it is accessible.
Slightly smaller than Kamala, with a particular reputation for excellent sunset light. The beach itself is beautiful — white sand, clear water, a headland at each end — and the Surin Beach road behind it has some of the better independent restaurants in the mid-island zone.
Surin tends to attract a slightly older and slightly more design-conscious crowd than Kata or Karon, partly because of its proximity to the Amanpuri resort at the northern headland and partly because of its own character. It has an atmosphere in the late afternoon — the light, the beach clubs setting up, the quality of the air — that is distinctly different from anywhere else on the island’s west coast.
The Laem Singh viewpoint, between Kamala and Surin, is worth finding. A scramble down from the roadside pull-off reveals a small cove and a viewpoint that most visitors drive past without noticing.
The combination of genuine beach quality, reasonable accommodation pricing, access to local food and local life, and a 20 to 30 minute drive to both the departure piers for boat trips and to Patong for an evening out — all of this makes the Kamala-Surin zone the most versatile base on the island. You are close enough to everything without being inside any of it.
