If someone asks me when to visit Phuket for the first time and the dates are flexible, November is often my answer. It sits at the intersection of several factors that are hard to find simultaneously at any other point in the year.
November marks the transition from the southwest monsoon to the northeast monsoon on the Andaman coast. By mid-November, the dry season is typically established — clear skies, calm seas, and the particular freshness that follows several months of rain. The vegetation on the limestone islands in Phang Nga Bay is at its most vivid green. The air is cleaner after the monsoon and the visibility, both above and below the water, is exceptional.
December brings the first wave of peak-season visitors, and by January the island is at maximum tourist density. November sits before all of that — the conditions are excellent but the boats are not full, the restaurants do not require reservations, and the popular spots are busy without being overcrowded. The experience of the Phi Phi Islands on a calm November morning, with a fraction of the January crowd, is something worth planning toward.
I have said this about November before and I will keep saying it: the afternoon light in Phang Nga Bay in November is extraordinary. Low sun angle, clear air, the islands lit from the side rather than overhead. The James Bond Sunset Experience in November is the version I would show someone if I wanted them to understand why I moved here and never left.
Early November can still have weather holdovers from the wet season — a rough day, an occasional afternoon shower. By mid-November the pattern is reliable. Book boat trips for the second half of the month if you want the most predictable conditions.
