After twenty years of living here and thousands of guests, I have heard every question about Phuket that exists. Here are the ones I get most often, with the honest answers.
Generally yes. Serious crime against tourists is rare. The main risks are scams (jet ski damage claims, tuk tuk diversions, gem shop setups), road accidents involving scooters, and the usual precautions relevant to any tourist destination. Use Grab for transport, book tours through reputable operators, and apply standard awareness in busy nightlife areas at night.
November to March for the best weather and sea conditions. December and January are peak season with crowds and higher prices. November and March offer almost the same conditions with lower pressure on bookings. April and May are transitional. June to October is wet season — workable with flexibility, but not ideal for planning boat trips.
Seven days minimum for a proper first visit. Ten days is better. Less than five days and you will feel rushed; most of what makes Phuket extraordinary takes time to find.
Yes, particularly in peak season. Good departure dates fill up weeks ahead for the Phi Phi day trip and the James Bond Sunset Experience in December and January. Book as soon as your travel dates are confirmed.
Thai Baht. ATMs are available throughout the island. Withdraw larger amounts less frequently to minimise per-transaction fees (typically 200 to 250 Baht per withdrawal on foreign cards). Cards are accepted at hotels, larger restaurants, and tourist-oriented businesses; cash is needed at markets and street food stalls.
No. Bottled or filtered water only. Every hotel, restaurant, and convenience store stocks it.
Yes. This is not specific to Phuket but it is particularly relevant: the activities available here — boat trips, scooter riding, diving, rock climbing — are the kind that generate claims. Ensure your policy covers water sports and any activities you plan.
You can, practically speaking — many rental shops will rent to unlicensed riders. Whether you should is a different question. Phuket roads require experience and situational awareness that first-time riders often do not have. Hospital emergency rooms on the island see a steady stream of tourists who misjudged this. If you have experience riding, fine. If you do not, use Grab.
Depends on what you want. Patong for maximum convenience and nightlife. Kata and Karon for a good balance of beach quality and amenities. Kamala and Surin for a more relaxed, upmarket mid-island experience. Bang Tao and Layan for luxury resort environment. Phuket Town and Old Town for culture, food, and local character.
Very much so. The Thai attitude toward children is genuinely welcoming, the beach options for families are excellent, the boat trips (with appropriate age considerations) are memorable family experiences, and the food culture is family-friendly. We take families on our boat trips regularly and they are consistently among the best-reviewed group types we host.
