Phi Phi is one of the most asked-about destinations for families visiting Phuket. Parents want to know: is the boat crossing too rough? Are the beaches safe for children? What do you do with a six-year-old at Maya Bay? Let me answer all of it honestly.
Yes, Phi Phi works for families — with some age and condition caveats that are worth understanding before you book.
The speedboat from Phuket to Phi Phi takes 45 minutes to an hour. In flat dry-season conditions, it is a smooth and genuinely exciting crossing for children — sitting at the bow of a speedboat with the sea ahead is something most kids enjoy enormously. In rougher conditions, the crossing can be bouncy enough to cause motion sickness in children who are susceptible.
Our advice: book dry-season departures (November to April) for families with young children. The sea conditions are reliably calm during this window. If there is any history of motion sickness, preventative medication the night before makes a significant difference. We brief all parents on what to expect before we leave the pier.
Children from about 5 upward generally handle the Phi Phi day trip well. Younger than 5 is not impossible but the full day is long, the sun is intense, and the pace requires sustained engagement that very young children may struggle with after the first couple of hours. For families with children under 4, the Phang Nga Bay day trip — calmer crossing, canoeing through sea caves, more variety of experience — is often a better fit.
Teenagers, as I have noted elsewhere, tend to love Phi Phi unreservedly. The snorkelling, the scenery, the monkeys at Monkey Bay, and the general spectacle of Maya Bay hit differently at 14 than they do at 4.
The snorkelling at Nui Beach and around Monkey Bay is accessible for children who are comfortable in the water. Life jackets and pool noodles are available on our boats, which means children who are not strong swimmers can still be in the water and see the fish. The water clarity at Phi Phi is genuinely extraordinary — children who have never seen tropical reef fish up close tend to have a visceral, immediate reaction to it that makes everything worth it.
Brief the children before they get in the water: do not touch the coral and do not chase the fish. These rules matter for the reef and they are easy to explain in age-appropriate terms.
Children tend to find Maya Bay striking rather than emotional — the sheer scale of the limestone cliffs and the colour of the water lands differently on a young brain than it does on an adult who has built it up from photographs. That is not a lesser reaction. It is just different.
The walk in from the pier takes about 10 minutes each way; manageable for most children over 5.
