People often ask me what the most romantic thing they can do in Phuket is. I’ve been here long enough and run enough trips that I’ve seen every version of this question. Anniversary dinners, surprise proposals, honeymoons, couples who just need a proper escape together.
And the answer is always some version of the same thing: get on the water.
There’s something about being out on the Andaman Sea — away from the hotels, the restaurants, the other tourists, all of it — that does something to a couple. The noise of ordinary life just drops away. You’re left with each other and the sea and, on the right evening, a sky turning colours that have no name. I’ve seen it work on couples who’ve been married twenty years and couples who’ve just said their vows. It’s the same reaction every time.
So here’s my proper guide to how to do the romantic Phuket boat trip right.
If I had to design a honeymoon experience from scratch, it would look a lot like this trip. You spend the late afternoon canoeing through the sea caves and hidden lagoons of Phang Nga Bay — places that can genuinely only be reached by canoe, completely inaccessible to the big tour boats. The walls of the cave are draped in ferns and roots, the water is dark and still, and the only sound is your paddle and the echo off the rock.
Then you emerge from the caves into the open bay just as the light starts to change. The limestone karst islands — great slabs of rock sticking hundreds of metres out of the water — turn gold, then orange, then a deep, glowing red as the sun drops behind the horizon. James Bond Island catches the light differently at that hour. If you’ve only seen it in photos, the reality is going to surprise you.
You have dinner on the boat while the sky finishes putting on its show. Then, after dark, back into the caves for the bioluminescent plankton. Your guide paddles you through, and when you run your hand through the water, it glows blue-green around your fingers. Not metaphorically. It actually glows. Every single time, without exception, people go quiet.

The best time of year for a romantic Phuket boat trip is November to April — the high season, when the Andaman is at its calmest and the visibility underwater is at its best. March and April in particular have extraordinary light in the late afternoon, which makes the sunset trips genuinely spectacular. That said, the shoulder months either side can be lovely too, and with fewer tourists around.
