Bang Tao is Phuket’s longest beach at almost six kilometres, and home to the Laguna Phuket resort complex — five interconnected five-star hotels sharing a lake, a golf course, and a canal system that makes getting between them by boat possible. It is, in other words, a genuinely unusual place on a Thai island, and it suits a particular type of traveller very well.
Long, wide, and sandy in a way that means even in peak season there is room to spread out. The northern end, toward Layan, is often nearly empty on weekdays. The southern end, near the Catch Beach Club zone, has more activity — beach vendors, parasols for hire, and the buzz of people who have come specifically for the beach club scene. In between is a lot of sand and a generally relaxed atmosphere.
The sea at Bang Tao is swimmable in dry season and occasionally rough in the wet season. Red flags during the southwest monsoon mean the same thing here as at any west-facing beach — stay out. In the November-to-April window, the bay is calm and the water quality is good.
The five hotels — Anantara Phuket Suites, Anantara Layan, Cassia Phuket, Laguna Holiday Club, and Banyan Tree Phuket — share facilities in a way that is almost unique in the region. If you are staying at one, you can access the others by canal boat. The golf course, the spa facilities, and the restaurants span the whole estate. For guests who are happy staying within the complex, it is a self-contained luxury environment of considerable quality.
Couples and honeymooners who want a luxury resort experience without the full Patong scene. Families who value the calm water and the range of facilities at the Laguna hotels. Golfers. Anyone who wants a base that is well-positioned for day trips — the airport is 20 to 25 minutes away, and our boat trip departures from the north Phuket pier are a short transfer.
Bang Tao is less suited to budget travellers or anyone who wants to be walking distance from a wide range of local restaurants and street food. The restaurant options within walking distance of most Bang Tao accommodation are primarily tourist-facing.
Catch Beach Club in Bang Tao is the island’s most established beach club and is worth visiting for a sunset drink regardless of where you are staying. The setting is good, the cocktails are properly made, and the view toward the Andaman at the end of the day is exactly what you come to Phuket for.
